Make Your Own Magnet Board

~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
I appreciate everyone's well wishes in my last post...I'm happy to say that I can finally *breathe* again! Thanks to my good old doctor and the meds he prescribed, my sinus infection is clearing up and my cough has just about fizzled out. I'm looking forward to finally getting back into some kind of routine this week!
I knew having that many magnets on my fridge would create about 400 pieces of additional artwork, memos, receipts, and photos - yikes!I wanted to follow up with some details on the last project I talked about - the DIY magnetic scrabble board project. It doesn't have to be a board for scrabble tiles at all, though. A few months back, I had bought a good supply of vintage Scrabble tile {400 total!} and I wanted to use them in a creative way. I thought they would make perfect magnets but I knew having that many magnets on my fridge would create about 400 pieces of additional artwork, memos, receipts, and photos - yikes! So I set about making a magnet board made especially for the Scrabble magnets. But you can use whatever magnets you like!
Basically, what you'll need for this project is a piece of sheet metal {I got mine from Lowes at around $7 for a 24"X36" piece}, a piece of thin plywood, trim, and Liquid Nail. Hubs used a nail gun to nail the trim into place but you could use a hammer and trim tails. {If you don't want to bother with adding trim, look for an old picture frame that will accommodate a metal insert. The metal can be snipped to size but will need a backing, however. }
Here is that pretty trim I mentioned in my last post. I had been envying this trim at the hardware store for a while, but at $18 for 8ft, it was out of my budget. How surprised I was to later find several pieces of the same trim in the corner of my garage! We bought it years ago when it was a little less expensive at $15. I had completely forgotten about it! Originally, we were going to use it to trim our windows.
Now, your hardward store may cut your plywood to size for you. {Lowes did for me, anyway.} You'll need the plywood to be the size of the sheet metal PLUS the width of your trim MINUS around a quarter of an inch to allow the trim to overlap the sheet metal just a bit. In retrospect, I would have had my plywood cut slightly smaller so that the plywood edges couldn't easily be seen from the side once complete. Also in retrospect, I would have just let hubs cut the plywood for me because the guy at Lowes didn't cut it quite right or straight and we still ended up trimming it a bit.
Here you see that I used a T-square to draw lines on the plywood showing exactly where the sheet metal would go in the center.
Then I generously applied liquid nail to the center of the plywood.
{Note: The photo below is of another magnet board project that required liquid nail on the entire board, not just the center...I just wanted you to see what I meant by "Liquid Nail" and what it looks like. More on that particular project another time...}
Next you'll want to carefully apply the sheet metal to the center of the board atop the Liquid Nail. Press gently from the center out. When it set up a bit, I was able to carefully walk all over the board to ensure good contact.
Now here is the part of this project where you're soon going to have to use your wonderful imagination. Why? Because I know, I know I took photos of the trim pieces I cut and laid neatly around the perimeter of the plywood. I know because I was so darn proud of myself for making those cuts by myself while hubs was at work! But for some reason, I cannot find those photos. Either I ran out of memory on my camera memory card and didn't realize it, or the kids deleted them when they were making their own Barbie action flick, or they were lost while being transferred to the computer...I don't know. *sigh*
But at this point, I measured the width and height of the my plywood and set the table saw to cut the pieces on a 45 degree angle. This creates nice mitered corners where the trim pieces come together.
And, now, imaginations on, everybody! Don't let what I found on my camera instead of my beautifully cut trim pieces distract you...
Again - *sigh*. Basically, you'll just take those trim pieces and lay them around the perimeter of your plywood {you can hold them in place with liquid nail if you like} and then nail the trim to the plywood. Fill in any gaps with wood filler, prime, and then paint!
I didn't want the bare metal showing, so I decided to decoupage my magnet board with pages from an older dictionary. I just brushed regular Elmer's glue onto the board in small sections, and applied the paper. The first layer of paper was to cover the entire board and all the edges, and the second layer of paper was more of a random pattern. When the glue was dry, I sprayed the paper with two or three layers of a satin clear coat. This is an important step to ensure durability of the paper.
About the Scrabble magnets themselves...I super glued small strong rare earth magnets {purchased from Ebay} to the backs. They stick extremely well even through the two layers of decoupage paper! They are disc magnets that are 1/4" wide X 1/16" thick. I actually bought 500 of them for about $25 - free shipping! The seller I purchased from also has much smaller quantities available.
So are you ready to see the finished result?
{Click to enlarge...There will be more photos when it's hung in it's final home - my studio.}
I didn't use all 400 tiles - I ran out of glue! But I don't think there would have been enough room for them anyway. I used almost 300.
I used "Oil Rubbed Bronze" spray paint for the trim. I love it's really dark brown finish. After I distressed the trim by sanding it, I clearcoated it in the same satin clearcoat I used on the paper. I did it all at the same time, actually!
The kids and I love playing Scrabble free form style! I love the sweet little words they come up with...
and the sweet little words I come up with as well:)
If you have any questions about this project, {especially the "use your imagination" part}, please let me know! Some folks have told me that my email link doesn't work...is anyone else having trouble with it? Just in case, my email is dear.twiceremembered@gmail.com.

What a cute idea! I was just wondering the other day how to make a magnet board for my kids art. (I'm tired of taping them to my stainless steel fridge). LOL Thanks for sharing!

Super cute idea! And what a great gift for someone who loves words. I'm bookmarking this for next Christmas!
I'm making this for my son's birthday ..love it...thanks
This is so awesome. I just love the scrabble magnets. I'm on the prowl for vintage scrabble ornaments, now. Thanks for sharing.
Congrats to you! It turned out SO well! :)
I have a huge picture frame in my basement right now that would work great for this!! Thanks for the inspriation! Would make a terrific Christmas present as well....adding to my list right now!
Kim,
Thanks for sharing another clever and creative idea! I am not involved in any linky parties but would certainly participate in yours if I have anything worthy to add. I can't commit to a weekly project.
On another note, I certainly hope now that I finally have a blog you will be hosting your annual Cottage Charm Giveaway! I am so looking forward to that.
Glad you are back to feeling like your energetic self!

What a great idea! I just finished my own "magnetic" project but I used magnetic primer paint. I will be posting it soon, I am only three weeks old to Blog World so I am trying to catch up! I would love for you to bring back the Make it Mondays, it was so inspirational!
I am loving it... thanks so much for sharing :)

Oh, goodness that is the sweetest magnet board! So glad you are finally feeling better.
Oh! yay! I missed MYM :D
That scrabble board is awesome, but I'm scared my lady is too young for that still.
Great idea! Love the dictionary pages.
I love it! My boys would have fun with it. I would love to leave my hubby sweet messages on it. If you have MYM, I will definitely link up!
Thanks,
Traci
What a wonderful project! Wish I had one! Maybe this will have to go into my future project file!
How neat! I must remember this....thanks!
Sweet! I LOVE it. Great tutorial too.
Love this idea...it's like an ongoing scrabble game! Thanks for the tutorial!
Love it! I have a couple of old Scrabble games that are missing random pieces...maybe I'll turn them into magnets!
Hi Kim!
I'm soooo glad you're feeling better and I ADORE your magnet board!!!!!!!!
I'm not sure I'll make it up in January- but I'll be there during Blissdom. Wanna hang? :-)
Layla

Love this - You did a fabulous job and the molding is gorgeous. I love the look of the pages and scrabble tiles together...perfect match!
I have to make my mother-in-law one of these. This is such a cool idea I L O V E it! Thanks so much for sharing!
I really love this. Just yesterday cleaning out my closet (because that's what we do in the new year) I found all my old sheet music from when I played the flute many years ago.
I can't bear to get rid of it, so there it will wait until I get the chance to use it for something creative like this!
I really love this idea. I'm thinking it might even help my kids with spelling! I will have to put this on my "to do list."
LOVE YOUR BLOG, STOP BY & SAY HI:) GIO
Love this idea!

Wow, I love this! I bought sheet metal to hang up in our hallway so that my daughter can hang up her pictures. This blows my idea out of the water. Very beautiful. Thank you for sharing.
I love this project! It's just beautiful. What a good way to use those Scrabble tiles.
Brenda
How cool! I love the size too :)
that's so funny that you've posted this, I LOVE IT! I've been wanting to do this for weeks, I just have to find a used Scrabble game. I keep finding "Junior" Scrabble with the cardboard pieces.
I like the "earth" magnets!!
Thank you for sharing!
This is a great idea. Oil Rubbed Bronze was a great color for the trim. It's fun because you can always change what the tiles say depending on your mood or day of the week.
WOW. This is seriously one of the coolest ideas i have EVER seen. No joke. Let me just say WOW again!

What an awesome project. You always have such great ideas.
Sorry to hear you've all been sick. There's been an awful lot of illness in our neck of the woods. I had fluish symtoms a few weeks ago and still don't feel totally up to par but getting there, I hope.
Take care of your little family and yourself.

I love this! We are pretty crazy about scrabble around here, but rarely have time to actually play a full game. This would be so cute and lots of fun! I am off to ebay in search of tons of tiles!
Love this and love your blog!! You are definitly one of my top inspiration sites!!
Very very cute! I featured this project in my Friday Favorites. SO cute!

I grabbed a button and I'm a follower now too!
I just clicked over from U Create and I'm so glad I did. This is my favorite magnet board to date. It's wonderful! I would love, love, love to link to this if you didn't mind.
I just saw this idea posted on funkyjunkinterior's blog, and had to look. Now I may have to save some of my tiles for this project!
Kim - this is awesome! I really MUST make one. I love it! You have the best ideas. Thanks so much for sharing in the DIY Show & Tell party! I love seeing what you're up to!

Nicely done!!! I have to admit, I'll probably go the lazy way and use a cookie sheet at first, but this sure gives inspiration for a big one! I have an extra Scrabble game, too. I linked to this on my weekly roundup - thanks for sharing!
What a great idea.......I love this just a ton!
I saw a lovely linen magnet board in Ballard Designs and thought, hmmm, could I make that? I googled "how to make a magnet board" and your beautiful blog was the first to come up. Thsnk you so much...I can't wait to get crafty!

Found this magnet board a few weeks ago and fell in love with it!! Just finished making one for the wall.. used poetry my papa(92!) reads to me as the background, went the hard way with using molding to make a frame, turned out awesome:) Got my sheet metal at sheet metal place rather than the hardware store- only 3 bucks! (16"x20")
Anyway- love your blog, thanks a million for the idea! It will make me smile for years to come!
Love this ... Trying to make one and am having issues with the paper adhering to the sheet metal- figured out how to keep it from bubbling when gluing but when I apply the clear coat the paper comes loose again .... Where am ingoing wrong?!? Thanks!
Thank you so much for your tutorial! I just love it and I am in the process of making one right now thanks to you! And then maybe I will become a pro at it because I liked it soooo much that I have decided to make several as gives to different friends and family members. lol. Keep um coming!
How much do you think you spent total on everything?
I live in Alaska, so our prices are more. But I don't think I spend more than 11.00. It was 5 and some change for the size of sheet metal I got, I picked out some nice trim for .82 cents a foot at 6 feet, and the backing board I got was from the "leftovers" bin at lowes, sold for .51 cents! I already had the glue and all the tools. And it's worth the money, even if I am giving it as a gift!
Thanks for such a great idea. I mentioned your project in my post and I'm working on mine for Christmas gifts tonight! Can't wait to finish (all 3).

I'm a huge scrabble fan, so of course I love this!
great job,

Great idea, but I am afraid now everyone is going to buy old Scrabble tiles and there will be a shortcut of them. Anyway, I am going to mention this to my Scrabble fans on www.word-grabber.com .
This is amazing! What imagination! love it!!!
My classroom needs this. . .thanks for the inspiration!
My classroom needs this. . .thanks for the great idea!
love it! Oriental trading has small magnets 250 for $5. I just bout some for a much smaller metal board project!
What a great project! My daughter is in Kindergarten and this is a fun way for her to practice spelling her words. Also, we are scrabble nuts, so I think its just plain cool. Thanks for sharing!
I love this idea! Much more personal than playing my hubby via on app! I featured it on my blog here http://crafting-cousins.blogspot.com/2012/01/cookbook-giveaway-winner-and-fab-5.html
Please tell me what material your curtains are made of? Is it linen, muslin? Thank you!
Love the board, I am preparing to make it now!
You are a very intelligent individual!
Galco® Cop Series Double Mag Case
You need to make these and sell them!!! Brilliant!
my mother loves scrabble ! so I'll fabric this wonderful magnet board for her ! thanks !!!!!!!!
I got the dictionary free at Salvation Army, the frame on clearance at Hobby Lobby (chipped but repairable), ordered the magnets and letters (made me wish I was a little tiny bit pack rat), but the sheet metal (24x36) was $19 at my Lowes!! UGH! But I bought it anyway. Love this project! Thanks for sharing the idea!
This is AWESOME! Love it!!!
I love this idea and I can't wait to do it! Thanks for sharing!
Where can you get all the letter tiles without having to buy multiple games? I love this!!!!
Found you from Hobby Lobby's posting on Pinterest! What a creative idea!!
I'm making for my grams as she is an avid scrabble player. However I think I am going to try to incorporate the scrabble board.... And add two rows with "start with 50 points" and "grams starts with neg 50 points". Any suggestions please email me... No so great with blogs and such! I found you on pinterst and I really live the project!
Just discovered your blog...I am in love! Greatest idea!
I love this. My sister is big into scrabble and word games, so I think I might make her a smaller version of it.
How is your decoupage holding up? I love the idea, just worried about the paper ripping with the magnets sliding over it?
Love this! What a great idea
I recently became a Pinterest addict and this is the first project I made. We are moving into a new house in a few weeks and I had one wall in the living room that I had no idea what to hang on it. This will be the prefect thing. It's a wall that everyone who comes to the house will have to walk by, so it will definitely attract attention.
I love it!!! It is such a cute idea. I have a daughter-in-law who loves scrabble. I want to make it for her Christmas.
I absolutely love this idea!! I am a scrable fanatic and totally want to do something similar to this for my house!

I am currently making this for a christmas present- i thought it was fun to paint a corner with chalkboard paint to keep score! This board was a great idea!
I made this for a christmas present! holy smokes such a complicated process! Had to order the scrabble tiles and the magnets online, find a dictionary at a thrift store, bought the frame already cut and glued at michaels.. then when I went to home depot, they couldnt/wouldnt cut my sheet metal (also should mention that aluminum isnt magnetic so get the other kind!!) Had to get my boyfriend to cut the plywood to size and the glue I bought E6000 didnt work very well for gluing the metal to the wood so I wouldnt recommend that.
Took me months to figure out and put together so just warning those out there that it looks easier than it is haha
I am a scrabble nut, as is my whole family. Made this board, but i used a picture frame found at salvation army. I too made the mistake at Lowe's, of buying the aluminum sheet, so after returning that, the project continued on. My sheet metal fortunately fit in the frame exactly with no cutting required. The only trouble i had was the pages wrinkling up, but i guess it gives it more character. I just bought my magnets from Michaels, and hot glued them on. I get so many compliments on that board and the kids love playing with it. Thanks so much for a great idea!

Came across this great idea on Pinterest. I'm going to make one for my guest house. Thanks for the great post.
It's a letter which often instills dread into people when they see it in their own letter set and that's why you should make sure you're prepared by memorizing all the words beginning with the letter Q.

I listed my scrabble pieces on listia, but then I saw this and I instantly removed them. I would love to do this with my son. I love scrabble, but sometimes I feel that I am the only one that loves it. Maybe if they only had to come up with one word at a time they would play with me I hope so :-].
i just bought a dry erase board and glued magnets on the back of the scrabble tiles. not as cute and fancy as yours but my nephew is loving it. he loves that we can leave messages on it for each other. i tell him that the word he put up is misspelledor not a word haha. i also tell him to use his dictionary that now sits by the board. thanks for the idea.
This is a really cute idea and the pictures are great!
I saw this project on Kickstarter and thought it might be something you could apply to your work!
